If you are wary of using the charts, I would check out the book Cables Untangled by Melissa Leapman. She gives a lot of details on cables and charts. That might help you before you start this.
What I do is take a highlighter (I have a pack of 10 colors) and highlight each of the different cables. Then I go to the key and highlight those. This essentially color codes the cables and makes it easier for me to go back and forth between the chart and the legend. HTH.
